Hello Hellebore- The prettiest way to greet spring

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring

As the first plants to bloom in spring,

Hellebores demand attention and will earn a special place in your garden.
Our Frostkiss® Hellebores are a unique group of hybrids created from nine different species! From this complex crossing we are able to bring to you marbled foliage traditionally seen in ericsmithii types along with rich-colored blooms usually only seen in orientalis types. Our varieties also offer more heat tolerance than traditional Hellebore and will bloom a bit later, more like January-March depending on climate. While our Hellebore are some of the first plants to bloom in the spring, the flowers can last for many weeks, well into mid-spring and are great as cut flowers.

Hellebore Care

Hellebores are most active in the spring and fall

These are the seasons it is recommended to plant Hellebore in your garden. For best results in the spring, plant as early as possible after last frost to give your Hellebore plenty of time to set new roots before the warms days of summer. When planting in the fall, it is important to plant early, as soon as the hot summer days have cooled to let the roots establish in the soil before going into the winter.

It is never a good idea to plant Hellebore in the summer months as Hellebore are not actively growing on the top, in the summer they are building a strong root structure and prefer to be well-established before going into warmer months.

Chose a spot that is partially shady, with afternoon shade or in full shade.

  • USDA Zones 5-8
  • Exposure: Part Shade to Full Shade
  • Water: Water as needed, a bit more after planting to establish but never let Hellebore sit in water or keep in soggy soil as they hate wet feet. Hellebore are drought tolerant once established.
  • Soil: Chose a well-drained area to plant in, an acidic soil works best for Hellebore, with a pH of around 5.5.
  • Winter Protection: Hellebores are tough perennials and can withstand very cold temperatures. Only when the weather is very cold and dry it might be a good idea to cover your Hellebore to protect the foliage from drying out.
  • Trimming: Every leaf helps to give energy to your Hellebore to form more flowers in the spring. Think of the leaves as the lungs of your Hellebore. It is for this reason we recommend only trimming foliage once flowers are seen in the spring. It can be tempting to trim foliage in the summer and fall, but this will take energy away from your Hellebore and lead to less blooms the following spring.
